How it works

Choose your current role and the role you're aiming for, then describe your skills and experience in your own words — no need to format it as a list. The tool matches what you wrote against a curated skill map for the target role and shows exactly where you stand: technical skills and leadership skills, scored separately.

Why technical and leadership are scored separately

Moving from an individual-contributor role into management (or between IC levels) usually means a real shift in what actually gets evaluated — the spec's own worked example is Backend Engineer → Engineering Manager, where technical skills like distributed systems stay relevant but people management, hiring, and performance management become the core bar. Seeing both dimensions side by side is more useful than a single blended score.

Once you know your skill gaps, see what real postings for the target role actually ask for with the Job Description Analyzer, or check what the move should pay with the Salary / CTC Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Skills Gap Checker work?
Pick your current role and the role you want, then list your skills in your own words. The tool compares your input against a curated skill map for the target role and marks each skill as have (✓), partial (⚠), or missing (❌).
What does "partial" mean?
Partial means the tool found related but not exact evidence — for example, mentioning "managed a team" for a role that specifically weighs "performance management" as a distinct skill. Treat it as a nudge to be more specific, not a confirmed gap.
Which roles are covered?
The IC ladder (Backend, Frontend, Full-Stack, DevOps/SRE, Data, Staff, Principal), the management ladder (Engineering Manager through Director), and Product Manager. More roles are added over time.
Is my input stored?
No. The comparison runs against your text for this one request only — never stored. Only anonymous usage analytics (that the tool was used) are recorded.
