How it works

Choose your current role and describe your skills and experience in your own words. The tool checks the roles mapped as typical next steps from where you are — often one IC option and one management option — and for each one, breaks down exactly which of its skills you already show evidence of, which are partial, and which are missing.

IC track or management track

Most senior individual-contributor roles have two realistic next moves: staying on the IC ladder (e.g. Backend Engineer → Staff Engineer) or moving into people management (e.g. Backend Engineer → Engineering Manager). Each move is scored on its own skill map — technical depth for the IC path, people management, hiring, and performance management for the management path — so you can see which is genuinely closer given what you already do today.

Once you've picked a direction, use the Skills Gap Checker to compare yourself against that one target role in more detail, or check what the move should pay with the Salary / CTC Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Career Track Finder work?
Pick your current role and describe your skills in your own words. The tool looks up the roles that typically come next from where you are, and for each one shows how many of its required skills you already have, partially have, or are missing.
How are the "next roles" decided?
Each role in our map is paired with the moves people from that role most commonly make next — for example, Backend Engineer typically leads to Staff Engineer (deeper IC track) or Engineering Manager (management track). This is a curated map, not a prediction about you specifically.
Why is one option ranked first?
Tracks are ordered by how few core skills you are currently missing for that specific option, based only on what you typed in — not by which move is "better." The most attainable path from your input floats to the top.
Is my input stored?
No. The comparison runs against your text for this one request only — never stored. Only anonymous usage analytics (that the tool was used) are recorded.
